This Preservation Program project stabilized two rock slopes above US 2, five miles west of Leavenworth in Tumwater Canyon.
Why is WSDOT
stabilize these slopes?
These rock slopes were identified for stabilization in the WSDOT Unstable Slope Management Program (pdf). Our Geotechnical staff evaluate such factors as catchment area, frequency of slope failures (rock fall incidents), and how often the driving lanes were impeded.
Stabilization techniques included scaling rocks from the slopes, installing rock bolts, installing steel netting as well as tree and debris removal.
The End Result
This project reduces the potential for falling rocks and trees creating a hazard on the roadway.
Project Benefits
- This project increases the stability of the rock slopes.
- Less rockfall clean up and fewer pavement repairs reduces maintenance costs.
- Widened ditches increases snow storage and keeps rocks and debris from reaching the roadway.
What is the project timeline?
Construction began July 5 and was complete Nov. 15.
