Overview
This preservation project paved 9.96 miles of US 2 through Tumwater Canyon, west of Leavenworth in Chelan County. The project upgraded the structural integrity and extends the life of the pavement, improving the ride as well as providing drainage and safety improvements. Construction began June 1 and was complete July 23, 2009.

Partnerships & Cooperation
An open house was held Nov. 13, 2008 at the Leavenworth Fire Department Conference Hall so our engineers could fine tune the traffic control plan that required weeknight closures of Tumwater Canyon.Significant planning and resources were applied to put into place a public information program, to provide timely and accurate travel delay and road closure information, including the project web page, Highway Advisory Radios at the junction of US 2 & US 97 east of Leavenworth and another at the west end of town, E-mail notification to media, businesses, schools, transit and emergency services, Electronic message signs on the highway, radio and newspaper announcements.
Extensive emergency service coordination was in place with 2 local fire districts, Washington State Patrol, Chelan County Sheriff, ambulance services and local hospitals.
Funding
This project was advertised for private contractor bids on March 16, 2009. Two qualified bids were opened on April 16th. On April 20th, contract #7716 was awarded to Central Washington Asphalt, Inc. for $1,683,781.53, 23% below the engineering estimate.
