Overview
This Safety Improvement Collision Reduction project addressed a High Accident Location on US 2/97 at Cashmere. Construction began May 5 and was complete on July 30, 2008.
This project was renamed US 2/97 West of Cashmere-Safety Improvements and combined with another project that installed concrete median barrier on US 2/97 west of Cashmere.
 | Improves Safety
The project reduces conflicts between turning vehicles and through traffic, with a signal and further improves safety with the addition of advanced warning beacons that alert highway traffic that the signal is about to change. Night time illumination installed as part of this project improves safety at the intersection, as well.

Partnerships & Cooperation
The 2002 US 2/97 Safety Corridor Study (pdf 1.86 mb) recommends short and long term projects to address the High Accident Locations and High Accident Corridors between the Big Y interchange and Wenatchee. This project was recommended in the study.
A public open house was held at the Cashmere Riverside Center on June 6th, 2007 to describe the project's access impacts and get input from the public who would be affected. The project was also detailed in presentations to the Cashmere Town Council and the Leavenworth Town Council at public meetings in April and May, 2007.
Funding
This project was advertised for private contractor bids on December 17th, 2007 and on January 23rd Contract #7466 was awarded to Granite Northwest, Inc., dba Basin Asphalt, for $1,812,109.65.
