January 2012
- Construction is shut down during winter months (late Nov. to Feb)
- Construction started in March 2011.
- The contractor has been working on the new structures for the overpass at Humorist and the interchange at SR 124.
- The project is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2012.
This project is constructing an interchange at the junction of US 12 and SR 124 at Burbank, and constructing a bridge for Humorist Road to cross over US 12.
Why is WSDOT
constructing the interchange?
WSDOT is constructing the US 12 and SR 124 Burbank interchange to reduce the risk of collisions, decrease congestion, and enhance economic vitality for the area.
The End Result
The new interchange will improve traffic flow between US 12 and SR 124, reduce the risk of collisions, and allow 60 mph travel speeds on US 12.
Project Benefits
- Safety. Constructing a new interchange and overpass eliminates two traffic signals and eliminates collisions caused by red light running. Eliminating several private highway access points and separating high speed US 12 traffic from slower SR 124 traffic, also reduces the risk of collisions.
- Congestion relief. Congestion will be relieved by replacing traffic signals and separating cross traffic. The interchange will provide free-flowing movement between the two state highways.
- Economic Vitality. An interchange allows traffic to flow freely, reduces travel times, eliminates conflicts and reduces the risk of collisions. These benefits are appealing to business developers looking for locations with good highway access.
- Environmental. WSDOT is constructing an interchange configuration that will minimize environmental impacts while providing efficient traffic movement.
What is the project timeline?
The project was advertised to contractors in October 2010. Construction began in March of 2011 with the project completion scheduled for summer of 2012.
