Rehabilitating the Simpson Ave Bridge required a 10-week closure. Motorists detoured using the Riverside Bridge.

The community takes part in the re-opening celebration.
The re-opening of the bridge was a community event. See more bridge photos.

Overview
This project rehabilitated the US 101 Simpson Avenue Bridge spanning the Hoquiam River in Hoquiam. Electrical, mechanical and structural components of the bridge and bridge drawspan were replaced. A new control house was installed, the pedestrian railing replaced and a new maintenance pull-out constructed.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
The new pedestrian railing and maintenance pull-out separates pedestrians, bicyclists and maintenance crews from bridge traffic.
Car GlyphRelieves Congestion
The new pull-out on the bridge deck allows crews to inspect and maintain the bridge with fewer traffic impacts.
Leaf Glyph Protects Environment
The Simpson Avenue Bridge is registered on the National Historic Register. As much as was possible, WSDOT designed the new control house to replicate the look, feel and layout of the original control house.

We donated several parts of the old control house, such as the original generator and control panel, to Hoquiam's Polson Museum. We also commissioned a report to photographically document the original bridge for historical records.
Dollar Sign Glyph Economic Incentive
The rehabilitated bridge will provide years of reliable service for vehicle and marine traffic.

Partnerships & Cooperation
Rehabilitation of the bridge required a 10-week closure. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of the community during the extended closure.
