Contractor Bergerson Construction Inc. was awarded the contract to stablize the Simpson Avenue Bridge piers with a low bid of $4.2 million.

The contractor has been working diligently to reopen the bridge before the busy holiday shopping season begins and the bridge will reopen to traffic by 6 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11. One week ahead of schedule.

Check out photos from the pier inspection (August 2010).

The bridge was built in 1927 and in 2008 received a $9.2 million mechanical and electrical retrofit.

Why is WSDOT repairing the US 101 Simpson Ave. Bridge again?

In August 2010, WSDOT bridge engineers closed the US 101 Simpson Avenue Bridge after inspections revealed severe degradation to the pilings of the most easterly pier. The bridge was closed for nearly five months as crews worked to reopen the bridge to traffic.

January 2011, WSDOT reopened the bridge and has been designing a permanent fix and securing a fix since.

This project completes the remaining stabilization measures by:

  • installing two additional pier supports at the NE and SE corners of the pier;
  • strengthening the walls of the existing pier;
  • transferring the remaining weight of the pier into the two new supports;
  • removal of the temporary tie-back anchors and cables;
  • and removal/replacement of the pier fender protection system.

The End Result
Once complete, the US 101 Simpson Avenue Bridge piers will be reinforced and ultimately the entire bridge will be more reliable for the traveling public.

Project Benefits
The Hoquiam community and Grays Harbor County will be able to use the Simpson Avenue Bridge with more reliability.
