US 101 - Purdy Canyon Vicinity Slope Stabilization

Status

April 2013

DETOUR:

Drivers can expect one-way alternating traffic controlled by a signal on US 101 in the Purdy Canyon vicinity throughout the duration of the project. Excavation work will completely close the highway for 25 nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sundays to Thursdays. A 22-mile signed detour will be in place to direct northbound and southbound traffic along State Route 106 back to Hwy 101.

Why is WSDOT stabilizing these slopes?
The slope is unstable and a chronic issue resulting in emergency maintenance and road closures. To stabalize the slope, WSDOT will cut back and flatten the slope by removing 76,000 cubic yards, or about 7,600 dump trucks, of dirt and material.

The End Result
The slope stabilization reduces the potential for slide related closures of US 101 and increases the protection of motorists from rock fall hazards.

Project Benefits
Reduced slides and emergency closures are the primary benefits, but this work also reduces maintenance costs associated with cleaning up fallen rocks and repairing the roadway.

What is the project timeline?
April 29, 2013 - Project advertised for contractor bids.
June 2013 - Bid awarded.
July 2013 - Construction begins.
