The eroded slope nips at the shoulder of US 101 near Hoodsport. This project reinforces the slope with rock, ensuring a safe and reliable roadway for motorists.

Status

Complete

WSDOT awarded the construction contract to Active Construction, Inc. of Tacoma.  Construction began on July 15, 2009 and was completed Aug. 14, 2009.

The contractor placed rip rap, streambed sediment and large woody debris to stabilize the slope and protect it from wave erosion.

Why is WSDOT creating armored slope and wave erosion protection?
This section of US 101, milepost 332.77 to 332.88, experienced wave erosion and is at risk of instability due to tidal action and wave scouring. By reducing erosion damage, delays, and improving safety, WSDOT will ensure that US 101 continues to provide the vital access to the Hood Canal and Peninsula region for Washington residents.

The End Result
A new rock barrier in wave-eroded locations will armor the slopes adjacent to Hood Canal. This will preserve the integrity of US 101, a major transportation route vital to the area. By reducing the threat of slides and delays the route will be safer and more reliable.

Project Benefits

  • Congestion Relief. The construction measures associated with this project will reduce the risk of unstable slope slides and minimize road closures.
  • Increased Safety. By stabilizing slopes the project will reduce the risk of debris reaching the roadway.

What is the project timeline?
Construction started in July 2009 and was finished in August 2009.
