Overview
We built a roundabout at the intersection of SR 9 and SR 538 to accommodate increased traffic and improve safety. The roundabout was built and paid for by a local developer under the direction of WSDOT.
 | Improves Safety
Roundabout intersections have been proven nationally to reduce all crashes by 39 percent, and injury accidents by 76 percent, at intersections that originally had stop signs or signals.
Roundabouts in Washington State are experiencing the same benefits because they slow traffic down and separate conflicting traffic flows. Roundabouts also greatly increase pedestrian safety.
|
 | Relieves Congestion
Traffic and congestion continue to increase at the intersection. A new 800-home development will be built nearby. The roundabout will help move more drivers safely and efficiently through the intersection for years to come.
Roundabouts create a safe and continuous flow of traffic. Unlike intersections with traffic signals, drivers don't have to wait for a green light at roundabouts to get through the intersection. They only have to yield to traffic already in the roundabout.
|
 | Economic Incentive
Roundabouts eliminate maintenance and electricity costs associated with traffic signals, which amount to approximately $5,000 per year.

Partnerships & Cooperation
The developer paid for design and construction of the roundabout under our direction and guidance. During construction, we monitored the project to ensure it meets WSDOT standards for quality, safety and environmental controls.
Funding
This project was 100 percent funded by the developer.
