SR 9 - SR 204 Intersection Improvements

Status

March 2012

  • We are nearly finished studying the different design options. The final study results are expected to be published this June.
  • We held a design workshop in March 2011. The presentation can be viewed here and the workshop summary can be viewed here.
  • For more information about this project, please read the project folio.
  • Construction is not yet funded.

WSDOT is working with the city of Lake Stevens to design improvements to the SR 9/SR 204 intersection near the Lake Stevens Center.

The need for improvements to the SR 9/SR 204 intersection was identified in the SR 9 Route Development Plan.

Why is WSDOT studying improvement options for the SR 9/SR 204 intersection?
State Route 9 is a critical link in Snohomish County and the only major north-south alternative to I-5. Traffic on SR 9 has increased as the area’s population continues to grow. Between 2000 and 2008, Snohomish County’s population increased by approximately 13 percent to approximately 684,000 residents.

From 2001 to 2006, traffic on SR 9 in Snohomish County increased by 25 percent. Drivers experience severe congestion at a number of intersections during peak travel times. SR 9 in the Lake Stevens area is the most congested part of the corridor.

The End Result
Through this early design stage, WSDOT will work with the city of Lake Stevens to develop a 10 percent design that will identify how the SR 9/SR 204 improvements will look and a cost estimate. This design work is needed to advance the project for future funding.

The city is working on a separate but related effort to develop a preliminary Lake Stevens Center Circulation plan (LSCC). The LSCC will identify internal circulation needs of the commercial sites at Lake Stevens Center to improve accesses and circulation, support current and future land use and improve transit operations.

For information about the city's LSCC, contact Public Works Director Mick Monken at mmonken@ci.lake-stevens.wa.us or 425-377-3237.

Project Benefits
The final improvements will relieve congestion at the SR 9/SR 204 interchange and support economic development in the community. Construction has not yet been funded.

What is the project timeline?
WSDOT will interview community stakeholders starting in late November. A design workshop will be held in February 2011.

Financial Information

In 2010 the Legislature provided $500,000 for preliminary design engineering. Construction is not yet funded.
