- We are working with the National Marine Fisheries Service to complete this environmental study. It’s expected to be finished by June 2012.
- There is no funding for construction at this time.

Due to regional economic development and the demand for affordable housing, the population of Snohomish County increased by nearly 80 percent between 1980 and 2000.
This population growth has caused an influx of traffic on SR 9 throughout Snohomish County. The once rural road is now a critical corridor for both commercial vehicles and commuters. Current traffic volumes have exceeded the capacity of the two-lane roadway, making the once free-flowing, rural SR 9 a congested highway during peak travel times.
Between 2003 and 2015 WSDOT will invest $318 million to transform SR 9 from a rural road into a wider, safer highway.
Why is WSDOT
studying the options for widening the Snohomish River Bridge on SR 9?
Approximately 27,000 vehicles use the Snohomish River Bridge each day. That number is expected to increase with future development in the area. The current bridge, built in 1959, is insufficient to meet the growing demand.
WSDOT will explore options for connecting a new Snohomish River Bridge to future widening projects on SR 9. These projects are subject to funding by the Legislature.
The End Result
Through this environmental documentation study, WSDOT will:
- Choose a preferred alternative for a new bridge.
- Complete preliminary design work.
- Formulate a cost estimate that will allow WSDOT to pursue funding.
Project Benefits
This study in the first step in widening SR 9 over the Snohomish River. It will help identify the type, size and location of a new bridge.
What is the project timeline?
The study began in early 2010 and is expected to be completed in June 2011.
