Overview
We widened SR 9 to a four-lane highway from SR 96 to Marsh Road south of Snohomish. We also built a new Marsh/Airport Way/Springhetti intersection, with new alignments of Airport and Springhetti. We made a variety of other improvements to reduce congestion and the risk of collisions, including:
- installing guardrail from SR 96 to Marsh Road
- installing a new traffic singal at 164th Street SE
- adding turn lanes at four major intersections
- interconnecting traffic signals on SR 9 between 176th Street SE and Marsh Road
- installing seven new traffic cameras from 164th Street SE to just north of Marsh Rd.

The new lanes will help improve traffic flow, reducing the risk of congestion-related collisions. A new traffic signal and turn lanes will help reduce the risk of collisions involving turning drivers.

The new lanes will provide additional capacity and help smooth the flow of traffic. The new traffic signal and turn lanes will allow more vehicles to move through the improved intersections during green lights.

 | Protects Environment
We upgraded or replaced culverts and ditches to help prevent erosion during large storms. We also built stormwater treatment ponds to treat highway runoff.

Partnerships & Cooperation
We started design and survey work in August 2004. In March 2008 we awarded the contract to Scarsella Brothers, Inc, who submitted the most competitive bid. We started construction in April.
The roadway was damaged by floods in January 2009. We began emergency repair work on April 20; the work was completed by Scarsella Brothers.
We opened the new intersection of Marsh, Springhetti and Airport roads on July 24, 2009. On Nov. 25, 2009 we opened the new SR 9 lanes to traffic and on Dec. 10 we turned on the new signal at SR 9 and 164th Street SE. We completed the remaining minor project work by October 2010.
Funding
This project was funded through the following fund sources:
- 2003 Gas Tax (Nickel Funding) - 5.3 million
- 2005 Gas Tax (Partnership Funding) - 45.7 million
- Existing State Funds - $2.4 million
- Total Funding From All Sources - $53.4 million
