Overview
We transformed the Guide Meridian (SR 539) from a narrow two-lane roadway to a wider and safer four-lane highway between Ten Mile Road and Lynden. We also divided the highway with a median and cable barrier, and built four roundabouts at key intersections to further improve safety.
 | Improves Safety
Intersections at Ten Mile, Wiser Lake, Pole and River roads have roundabouts to help foster a safe and continuous flow of traffic, The northbound and southbound lanes are divided by a median with cable barrier to help prevent deadly crossover collisions. In all, more than four miles of Guide Meridian was transformed from a narrow two-lane roadway with minimal shoulders to a wider and safer four-lane highway.
Motorists can now see further ahead at hills and dips, and wider shoulders provide room for emergency stops and allow mail delivery to occur out of the way of traffic.
Roundabouts are helping to reduce the number and severity of collisions at intersections ;provide an easy and safe way for drivers to turn around, and improve the flow of traffic.

 | Relieves Congestion
Adding eight new lane-miles to the highway adds vehicle capacity to the highway.
Safety improvements reduce collisions that are a leading cause of congestion.
Extra lanes and wider shoulders mean that collisions can be cleared quicker, so we keep drivers moving.
Roundabouts reduce congestion at intersections.

 | Protects Environment
This project provided a stormwater collection and treatment system, roadside planting, and new wetlands. Water quality and detention ponds were constructed to clean up the stormwater runoff.

Partnerships & Cooperation
Throughout the planning and design phases, multiple open houses were held for the public to attend between April 1997 and July 2005.
During that period, and the four years of construction, we collected input from local officials, community members, drivers and residents. We also attended local meetings and worked with the local media to provide updates.
