Why is WSDOT
replacing the Davis Slough Bridge, and widening and raising the highway?
The highway and bridge were built more than 60 years ago and are not tall enough or strong enough to withstand flooding from high tides and storms.
There are logs in Davis Slough that could threaten the bridge during nasty winter storms. Winter storms whose southerly winds and waves push across the Puget Sound, driving logs (deposited by the Stillaguamish River into Port Susan) into the old, low bridge.
Today’s highway is quite narrow and there isn’t much room on the shoulders. If there’s a crash, the whole highway usually ends up getting blocked, causing significant delays and backups. This ends up restricting access for emergency responders. There’s also very little room for bicyclists and pedestrians.
The bridge and highway are susceptible to damage in a major earthquake and could easily be knocked out of commission for quite some time. The highway is the only road on or off Camano Island; it’s the island’s lifeline. Without it, there’s no other route.
The End Result
We’re going to raise and widen a three-quarters of a mile section of State Route 532 between Smith and Eide roads and replace the Davis Slough Bridge to help improve and protect the highway from storms, high tides, floods, earthquakes and blocking collisions.
- Raise the highway 5 feet across the island.
- Raise the bridge 9 feet.
- Add 12-foot-wide lanes.
- Add 14-foot-wide shoulders.
- Add a 4-foot-wide striped median.
We plan to widen the highway by an additional 24 feet, increasing the shoulder width to 14 feet wide on each side and adding a 4-foot-wide median. This will help make it much safer and easier for drivers, emergency responders, bicyclists and pedestrians to all use the highway.
Not only are we raising the new bridge 9 feet and widening it 24 feet, but we’re also making it a lot stronger so that it can withstand a strong earthquake.
We understand how important this highway is to the community. We believe raising, widening and strengthening it is critical to maintaining a safe and secure way on or off the island in the event of a storm, earthquake or blocking collision.
