I-5 - Smokey Point: 172nd St. NE (SR 531) Interchange Modifications & SR 531 Safety Improvements - Complete June 2006

Overview
A new bridge at the I-5 interchange with 172nd St. NE improves safety and traffic flow.

The Smokey Point Bridge is located near the City of Arlington in Snohomish County. A two-lane bridge over I-5 was replaced with a  six-lane bridge. A bike lane and pedestrian walkway on SR 531 improves safety.

Partnerships & Cooperation
The Tulalip Tribe was one of WSDOT's funding partners in this project. The Tulalip, Stillaguamish, Samish, and Kikiallus Tribes were consulted in November 2002 regarding this project, and a Cultural Resource Survey was prepared. In March 2003, that survey was distributed to these Tribes with a request to review and comment on its contents. After 30 days, the survey was forwarded to the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) who concurred with WSDOT's findings and recommendations--that no tribal resources would be affected by the project--in late April 2003.
