Overview
WSDOT will protect SR 530 in a landslide-prone area by building a retaining wall and improving drainage.
Why is WSDOT
building a retaining wall east of Oso on SR 530?
In February 2006, WSDOT maintenance crew found a rapidly growing crack on SR 530 caused by slope movement. The crack continued to grow at a fast rate, and required emergency repairs. Due to the potential for a landslide destroying a portion of the roadway, engineers agreed that a wall should be built to protect the roadway and drivers.
The End Result
Crews will build a temporary detour roadway below the current highway. Then crews will install drainage to help stabilize the landslide and build a wall to protect the highway from further damage.
Project Benefits
This project protects an important state highway, keeping the roadway open for commuters and freight traffic. If the roadway was closed, drivers would have to use a 58-mile detour.
What is the project timeline?
- Emergency repairs were made in spring 2006
- Construction began April 2011
- Construction completion anticipated in January 2012
