We will build a new direct ramp from eastbound SR 522 to eastbound US 2 in Monroe. We will widen SR 522 to four lanes from the 179th Avenue SE overpass to the US 2 interchange. We will also add an additional eastbound lane on US 2 from the SR 522 interchange to Chain Lake Road and an additional westbound lane on US 2 from the SR 522 interchange to Cascade View Drive.
Why is WSDOT
improving the US 2/SR 522 interchange?
The busy SR 522/US 2 interchange leads to congestion on both state routes and through the city of Monroe. Currently, drivers heading from eastbound SR 522 to eastbound US 2 must stop at a signal and turn left onto US 2. The new ramp will provide direct access to US 2 and reduce congestion at the interchange.
Widening SR 522 near the interchange will double the capacity of the highway, improving traffic flow and travel times. We will build a median to separate opposing lanes of traffic, which will reduce the potential for head-on collisions. Adding additional lanes on US 2 near SR 522 will also help ease congestion at the interchange.
The End Result
Drivers will benefit from a new direct ramp from eastbound SR 522 to eastbound US 2, as well as additional lanes on SR 522 and US 2 near the interchange.
Project Benefits
- Safety - Widening the highway and building a new direct ramp will improve traffic flow and reduce the risk of congestion-related collisions. Separating eastbound and westbound SR 522 traffic with a median will reduce the risk of serious crossover collisions.
- Congestion relief - The new direct ramp and additional lanes on SR 522 and US 2 will improve traffic flow and help relieve congestion at this busy interchange.
What is the project timeline?
April 2010 - We advertised the project for competitive bidding.
June 1, 2010 - We awarded the contract to Scarsella Brothers of Kent.
June 28, 2010 - We started construction.
Nov. 17, 2011 - Open new flyover ramp from eastbound SR 522 to eastbound US 2.
Spring 2012 - We expect to complete construction.
Financial Information
