November 2009
- Crews have completed the majority of the paving and striping work on SR 522, 68th Ave. NE, 73rd Ave. NE, and NE 181st Street. Driveway paving, utility work and landscaping are under way.
- The central segment (SR 522 from 65th Ave. NE to 73rd Ave. NE) is scheduled to be completed in early 2010.
WSDOT is working with the city of Kenmore to improve safety, transit reliability and traffic flow on SR 522 between 65th Ave. NE and 83rd Pl. NE in Kenmore. Improvements will include adding new traffic signals and sidewalks, constructing an underpass on the Burke-Gilman Trail, widening SR 522 for business access and transit lanes, replacing the Swamp Creek Bridge, and more.
Why is WSDOT
partnering with Kenmore to improve SR 522?
SR 522 in Kenmore has been identified as a state highway that has a higher than normal rate of severe collisions. The improvements will improve safety and traffic flow for the diverse group of commuters that use SR 522.
The End Result
When the work is complete drivers and pedestrians will have the following improvements on SR 522 between 65th Avenue NE and 83rd Place NE:
- Additional signals and left and U-turn pockets
- Burke-Gilman Trail improvements
- New sidewalks, crosswalks and lighting
- Additional lanes for business access and transit
- Burying of overhead power lines
- Installation of landscaping and unique design features
Project Benefits
- Driver Safety - Crews will replace the two-way center turn lane with a landscaped center median with left turn and U-turn pockets. These changes will lower the risk of collisions.
- Bicyclist and Pedestrian Safety – Updates to the Burke Gilman Trail, including a pedestrian underpass, have improved bicycle and pedestrian safety. The project also includes improved sidewalks, pedestrian countdown signals, audible signals, and ramps.
- Congestion Relief - Business access and transit lanes mean buses and other vehicles pulling into and out of driveways do not interrupt traffic flow in the through lanes.
- Improved Appearance – The burying of utilities and the addition of landscaping, distinct design features, and sidewalks at many locations along SR 522 improve the appearance of the corridor.
What is the project timeline?
