Weekend success! New SR 520 westbound lanes open to traffic

We opened the new westbound SR 520 lanes to traffic early Monday morning, as planned, between the floating bridge and Montlake – 54 years to the day since the original SR 520 floating bridge opened. Working around the clock over the past weekend, Aug. 25-28, crews paved the new roadway’s western segment, relocated the westbound SR 520 Montlake bus stop, striped new lanes, installed new signs, and completed the tie-in between the new lanes and the old westbound lanes to I-5. The pictures below show how the lanes changed from construction to finished product. For more photos of how it all came together, check our Flickr page.

Two milestones down, one to go: SR 520 trail scheduled to open in November

What’s next on the West Approach Bridge North project? This fall, we plan to extend the SR 520 trail from the floating bridge to Montlake. We know many of you are eager for the cross-lake bicycle and pedestrian path to open, and so are we! We will let you know as soon as we have a more specific date for the trail’s opening.

Before then, we’ll have another weekend closure of SR 520 to restripe the old eastbound lanes, adding an HOV lane east of Montlake. Then, in late 2018, we’ll shift both eastbound and westbound traffic onto the West Approach Bridge North as we start Montlake Phase construction.
