We will seismically retrofit six bridges that either cross SR 518 or carry SR 518 over city streets. The project will strengthen the following bridges so they are better able to withstand future earthquakes:
- SR 518 as it crosses over SR 509
- SR 518 as it crosses over 8th Ave. S
- SR 518 as it crosses over Des Moines Memorial Drive
- 24th Ave. S as it crosses over SR 518
- 154th St. as it crosses over SR 518
- The ramp from SeaTac Airport to westbound SR 518
Why is WSDOT
seismically retrofitting bridges along SR 518?
The purpose of WSDOT's seismic retrofit program is to proactively strengthen bridges to minimize earthquake damage or catastrophic failure. Many bridges do not meet current seismic standards, including six bridges along SR 518. Retrofitting these bridges will bring them up to standard and reduce the chances of damage during an earthquake.
The End Result
We will install steel jackets around bridge columns, widen the column pier caps, add blocks between girders and complete other seismic safety upgrades. When complete, these seismic retrofits will improve the stability and safety of the bridges during future earthquakes.
Project Benefits
- Safety - Retrofitting these bridges will improve their stability and strength, better allowing them to withstand earthquakes and other seismic activity.
- Mobility - Strengthening and stabilizing bridges helps maintain access to SeaTac International Airport
- Preservation - Improving bridge strength and stability to prevent catastrophic failure reduces expensive replacement cost in the event of seismic activity.
