SR 510 - Yelm Loop - Phase 1 open October 2010

November 2015

  • Stage 1 construction, to a new roadway from Mud Run Road to Cullens Road, is complete. See photos of the project. The roadway opened to traffic October 20, 2010.
  • Stage 2 construction was funded by the Connecting Washington revenue package approved by the 2015 Washington State Legislature.
  • State 2 construction is scheduled to begin during 2021.

Why is WSDOT making this improvement?

To reduce congestion on Yelm Avenue and First Street, and improve freight mobility, safety and traffic circulation through the City of Yelm. The new road allows traffic to move more efficiently between Spanaway, Roy and McKenna in Pierce County and destinations in Thurston County.

The End Result
Reduced congestion on SR 510 in the Yelm area.

Project Benefits

  • Safety - Improved safety through downtown core due to less congestion and reduced traffic near schools and businesses. Separated pathways will enhance bike and pedestrian mobility.
  • Congestion relief - Divers using Yelm Avenue and First Street will benefit from improved traffic mobility.

What is the project timeline?

  • 2004 - WSDOT began updating the environmental assessment and preliminary design prepared in 2000 for the City of Yelm; a property owners forum was conducted; and a cost-risk assessment was completed.
  • 2005 - The Legislature provided additional funding for the project; design and environmental work resumed, including a Biological Assessment in compliance with the Endangered Species Act.
  • 2006 - An access hearing was conducted.
  • 2009 - Legislature funds construction of Stage 1; right of way purchases continue for both Stage 1 and Stage 2; Stage 1 advertised for construction bids in late December 2009.
