SR 503 - 4th Plain/ SR 500 Intersection - Add right turn lane

Status

November 2009

  • Design and environmental documentation will begin this year.
  • For additional information regarding public involvement, safety improvements, environmental protection and tribal impacts of this project, visit the Project Specifics page.

Overview
This project will make improvements to the intersection of SR 503 and SR 500, where they meet 4th Plain Boulevard. By adding a right turn lane from southbound SR 503 to westbound 4th Plain Blvd., congestion will be eased while safety is greatly improved for both motorists and pedestrians.

Why is WSDOT making this improvement?
Safety will be improved and congestion will be relieved at this intersection. During peak hours, delays on southbound SR 503 at the signalized intersection prevent motorists from making a right turn onto westbound 4th Plain Blvd. This project will provide a right turn lane, allowing motorists to negotiate the right turn while through traffic is stopped at the intersection.

The End Result
This project will add a right turn lane from southbound 503 to 4th Plain Blvd., improving safety for motorists traveling through this busy intersection.

Project Benefits
Safety: This project will improve safety by reducing rear-end type collisions on southbound SR 503 and sideswipe type accidents on 4th Plain Blvd.

Congestion Relief: Adding a right turn lane will decrease the number of vehicles stopped at the intersection, by allowing motorists to enter the right turn lane prior to reaching the intersection.
