Construction of the State Route 500/NE Thurston Way Interchange was the second of several projects aimed at making travel on SR 500 safer and more efficient. A bridge was constructed over NE Thurston Way allowing SR 500 traffic to cross unimpeded.
Replacing signalized intersections with interchanges and overpasses allow motorists to travel more safely and efficiently through the SR 500 corridor. Motorists on SR 500 now travel over Thurston Way without stopping, and motorists traveling from SR 500 to Thurston Way can exit smoothly off SR 500. The new interchange has improved safety; created better connections to existing roads; improved pedestrian and bicycle connections; increased capacity and decreased congestion.
A new bridge constructed over NE Thurston Way allows SR 500 traffic to cross unimpeded, rather than traffic crossing through an intersection.
Congestion has been eased, as motorists traveling on SR 500 no longer are delayed by a signaled intersection at NE Thurston Way.
Partnerships & Cooperation
Public involvement was a part of this project since its inception. The SR 500 / NE Thurston Way Interchange project is the result of collaborative efforts between Westfield Shoppingtown Vancouver, WSDOT, the City of Vancouver and many other local business and neighborhood groups.
WSDOT held one public meeting during the project's design phase and three public meetings after the start of construction in April 2001. These meetings provided information on project's expected timeline, milestones, work sequence, anticipated traffic impacts and general project information. They also served to collect information on public wants and needs.
At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan. Sound Transit worked with the Tulalip Tribe during the environmental assessment phase of this project.
