Why is WSDOT
replacing the Manette Bridge?
The old Manette Bridge, which was built in 1930, is structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. Read WSDOT's summary of the current bridge condition.
In March 2008 the maximum allowable vehicle weight crossing the bridge was reduced as a result of findings from routine inspection of the bridge. Reducing the stress of heavy vehicles on the bridge extended its useful life and kept it operational while the new one was constructed.
Construction Phase
Work to demolish the above-water sections of the old bridge is under way and is scheduled to conclude in January 2012. During this work, drivers will experience one-way, alternating traffic across the new bridge and at the intersections on either end from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
In-water work to remove the old bridge footings is scheduled to occur in 2012. This demolition will not impact traffic on the new bridge.
The End Result
The new Manette Bridge was built to current codes and engineering standards and accommodates motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. This project preserves the important connection across the Port Washington Narrows, and improves mobility and safety in the Bremerton area.
Compare the new bridge to the existing bridge.
Project Benefits
• Improved structure. The new bridge was designed and built to current engineering standards.
• Safety. Wider shoulders and sidewalks enhance bicycle and pedestrian mobility.
