November 2009
We are in the phase of the NEPA EIS process which focuses on technical investigations. This work is essential to understanding the impacts and implications of the proposed alternative.
Permits for Right of Entry
If you live in the project area, you may have received a letter or phone call from WSDOT asking permission to enter your property. Staff are gathering data about wetlands, streams, wildlife, historic sites and other parts of the environment. We anticipate the investigations will begin in the fall 2009. If you have any questions, please contact the project manager.
Additional information about the study can be viewed by going to the Study Library and the Corridor Alternatives Web page.
Why is WSDOT
studying State Route 302?
State Route (SR) 302 is an important east-west link for Key Peninsula communities to Gig Harbor as well as Tacoma and other parts of Washington. Economic development puts demands on the highway system creating concerns about safety and congestion.
To address these concerns, WSDOT is studying the SR 302 corridor from Key Peninsula Highway to SR 16. The study evaluates the environmental impacts of:
- creating a new corridor, and
- improving the existing corridor by providing improved mobility and enhanced safety.
The End Result
The end result of the environmental impact statement process will be a preferred alternative that meets the transportation needs and fulfills all federal and state environmental laws.
Project Benefits
The SR 302 Corridor Study EIS will determine the potential environmental impacts of future projects which will help alleviate congestion and improve safety of the traveling public.
What is the project timeline?
2007 - WSDOT began evaluating existing conditions and studying traffic patterns
2008 - Preliminary environmental work was conducted, a travel model was developed for the study, and the first of two alternatives screening exercises occurred
2009 - Notice of intent to prepare an environmental impact statement was issued, WSDOT held an agency and public scoping comment period and the second alternatives screening exercise was conducted
Mid 2009 to 2010 - WSDOT will begin detailed environmental and engineering work to be included in the discipline reports, an important component of the environmental document
