Status

Fall 2009

This project is currently at the 30% design level. Until more project funds are authorized, no more work can be done.

Why is WSDOT building this interchange?
This project will increase mobility by providing direct access to the area between Sunset Highway and the Columbia River.  This will enhance safety by balancing traffic flows, reducing congestion and backups.

The project will also create jobs during construction and will ultimately lead to significant development in the area, further creating construction and permanent jobs.

The End Result
The proposed interchange will provide direct access to Empire Street, a Douglas County road that parallels Sunset Highway.  For many years, this area has been considered for development but lack of access has been a deterrent.  This project would open up this area for commercial and residential development.

Project Benefits

  • Improved mobility - Will reduce traffic on Sunset Highway by providing an alternative route for local travelers.
  • Increased safety - Will eliminate an at-grade intersection on Highway 2/97, significantly reducing the risk of collisions.
  • Encourages Development - Allows access to property zoned commericial and residential for development.
  • Creates temporary and permanent jobs - during construction and from commericial and residential development.

What is the project timeline?
This project is currently at the 30% design phase.  We have applied for a federal grant to fund this project.  We'll find out if this project is funded in January, 2010.

Financial Information
Currently, this project is unfunded.  WSDOT is applying for Grants to fund this project.  We are also exploring other avenues to fund this project.
