Why is WSDOT
replacing this bridge?
The existing Mabton-Sunnyside bridge, crossing the Yakima River and built in 1954, is classified as a structurally deficient structure, with weight restrictions in both directions. The roadway width across the bridge is only 24 feet.
The End Result
There will be a new, wider bridge spanning the Yakima River that meets current WSDOT standards and is rated for legal highway loads.
Project Benefits
- Freight Mobility - The current bridge cannot carry legal loads. A new bridge will eliminate these restrictions and allow legal loads to cross.
- Safety - Replacing the existing narrow bridge with a wider structure will provide a safer roadway with wider shoulders.
