SR 203 - Corridor Safety - Complete August 2010

Overview
We improved safety along the 24-mile SR 203 corridor between Fall City and Monroe by addnig turn lanes and installing new guardrail, rumble strips, signs, striping and lighting.

From January 2005 through December 2008 there were 691 collisions on the corridor, including three fatal collisions and 10 serious injury collisions. Of the collisions, 157 were run-off-the-road collisions. From 2005 to 2008 there were 34 collisions on SR 203 between North High Rock Road and Tualco Road, including one fatal collision and three serious injury collisions. Twenty-one collisions were rear-end collisions and four involved drivers entering the highway from a side street or driveway.

We reduced the risk of run-off-the-road collisions by installing rumble strips and guardrails along 24 miles of SR 203 between Fall City and Monroe. We added a two-way left-turn lane between North High Rock Road and Tualco Road to reduce the risk of rear-end collisions and collisions involving turning drivers. We also added a southbound right turn lane at 203rd Street SE, and updated striping and signing throughout the project area.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
Shoulder rumble strips help keep drivers in their lane and reduce run-off-the-road collisions. Rumble strips alert drivers that they are leaving their lane of travel by creating a loud noise and vibrations when the wheels of the car touch the rumble strips. Guardrails prevent vehicles from striking fixed objects and rolling over into ditches. A new two-way left-lane between North High Rock Road and Tualco Road and a new southbound right-turn lane at 203rd Street SE will provide a refuge for turning drivers.

Partnerships & Cooperation
We awarded the project contract to Tri-State Construction on Jan. 4, 2010 and we started construction in February. We wrapped up work in fall 2010.
