Overview
WSDOT repaired a problem known as bridge scour damage under SR 202 at Tokul Creek in rural King County.
Two old bridge piers under SR 202 at Tokul Creek were trapping wood and another debris, causing fast moving water to erode the banks near the current bridge abutments. The resulting scour posed safety problems to bridge.
Crews removed large amounts of wood and other debris, removed the old concrete bridge piers and armored the current bridge piers with rip-rap and large rocks. This temporary repair will help protect the bridge during the rainy season, when creek flows are higher and faster.
A more permanent repair will be made in summer 2012. At that time crews will armor the stream bed with a roughened channel design and construct rock barbs upstream.
Project timeline
- Sept. 3, 2010: Temporary repair began.
- October 2010: Temporary repair completed.
- Summer 2012: Permanent repair begins.
