Overview
The Skagit River was eroding the riverbank along State Route 20, east of Rockport in Skagit County, and getting dangerously close the highway. It was within four feet in the worst locations.
We hired a contractor to place rock in the riverbank to protect and reinforce the highway. The rock is only a stop-gap measure to stabilize the road. Designers are working on a plan to redirect the flowing water away from the highway.

This project should result in a safer, more reliable highway in this location that is not in danger of washing out during winter storms.
Long-range designs and planning will limit the need for emergency repairs that cause the greatest damage to the roadway and environment, and create delays for drivers.

Partnerships & Cooperation
WSDOT worked with state and federal agencies and local Indian tribes to find a solution.
Funding
Callen Construction was hired for their low bid of $84,400.
Funding for this project came from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Emergency Relief Fund.
