Status

  • The project has been awarded to Strider Construction Co., Inc. and on-site work will occur in March 2013.

Construction will take place at the Friday Harbor ferry terminal on San Juan Island in spring 2013.  WSDOT Ferries Division (WSF) is planning improvements to make the terminal area more user-friendly for pedestrians and vehicles by providing sidewalks and signage to direct pedestrians along a route that is clear of vehicle traffic.

Why is WSDOT making these changes to the Friday Harbor ferry terminal?
Existing pedestrian facilities at Friday Harbor are not adequate to support the large amount of foot traffic that disembarks the ferry, particularly during the summer months. This project will increase pedestrian space and separate it from the vehicle space to reduce the risk of vehicle/pedestrian conflict. This project will improve pedestrian safety, ferry loading efficiency and schedule reliability.

The End Result
Crews will install sidewalks with wider areas at the intersections.  This will provide more space for pedestrians to stand during off-loading when necessary and reduce roadway crossing distances.  Informational signs will be installed to help pedestrians with off-loading and on-loading as well as guiding them from the ferry to the following areas:

  • Memorial (Circle) Park
  • Friday Harbor Downtown Core key destinations
  • Cannery Landing
  • Friday Harbor Terminal Building and waiting area
  • Designated pick-up and drop-off locations

Project Benefits
Better defined pedestrian pathways will reduce vehicle/pedestrian conflicts and streamline vessel loading/offloading operations. Better informational signage will help direct pedestrians to their desired locations.

What is the project timeline?
