SR 20 - Cornet Bay Road to Rosario Road - Complete June 2008

Overview
We replaced sections of outdated log guardrail along State Route 20, north of Oak Harbor, with a new log guardrail that meets current design standards. The new guardrail retains many of the character-defining features of the old guardrail, including the defining log and rock-and-mortar post appearance.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
WSDOT replaced the existing guardrail to make this section of SR 20 near the Deception Pass State Park safer for drivers.
The new guardrail improves safety by reducing the chance of vehicles breaking through it.

The new log rail also reduces the risk of "snagging" collisions, where a vehicle hits the guardrail at an angle and can catch on the stone edges of the rock bollard. This can cause a vehicle to spin back into traffic.

Partnerships & Cooperation
WSDOT brought together multiple organizations, including Island County Public Works, the Federal Highway Administration, Washington State Parks and Recreation, State Office of Archaeology and Historical Preservation, and the Washington State Patrol to design a barrier that replicates the look of the original log rail while meeting current safety standards.
