The Green River (Neely) Bridge was built in 1959. This bridge has experienced excessive pavement wear since it was last resurfaced in 1994. In addition, the bridge expansion and transverse joints need repaired.
The Green River bridge is on the main commuter route for drivers traveling on SR 18 between I-90 and I-5. About 48,000 drivers cross this bridge each day.
As part of this project, we will also repair and repave SR 18 west of I-5, repave the eastbound SR 18 off-ramp to Weyerhauser Way, and repair and repave the approach to the railroad bridge west of C street.
Why is WSDOT
repaving the Green River (Neely) Bridge?
The bridge deck has deteriorated and is in need of repaving to preserve the existing roadway. We will repair the bridge deck by removing 1 1/2 inches of the roadway by hydro milling, which is a removal technique that utilizes high-pressure water to break up the concrete. We we will also repair the expansion and transverse joints as needed.
There are two parallel bridges at this location. Work will be done on the eastbound lanes only.This project will require construction equipment and personnel on the roadway. Due to the limited width of the bridge deck (28 feet), a full four-day, around-the-clock closure of the eastbound bridge is anticipated at this time to ensure worker safety. A detour will be in place during the closure.
The End Result
Once this project is complete, motorists will experience a smoother ride and less wear and tear on their vehicles. The new bridge deck will also preserve the underlying bridge structure.
