Finances & Schedule

With five years of construction and design work to build a new Tacoma Narrows Bridge behind us, the overall project is nearly complete. The $849 million project consists of constructing a parallel suspension bridge, improving 2.4 miles of roadway on State Route 16, and retrofitting the adjacent 1950 bridge. The new bridge opened to eastbound traffic in its final configuration on July 16, 2007. Work continues on the westbound (1950) bridge, and during commute hours it accommodates three westbound lanes. During non-commute hours, the bridge may be reduced to two westbound lanes for bridge work and associated roadway work. All work on the project is scheduled to be complete by spring 2008.

2002
September: WSDOT and Tacoma Narrows Constructors start new Narrows Bridge design work.
October: Groundbreaking ceremony held October 5.

2003
January: Roadway construction begins.
March: Cutting edge # 1 (base of foundation) leaves Seattle for Tacoma.
April: Cutting edge #2 (base of foundation) leaves Seattle for Tacoma.
July/August: Caissons (foundations) towed from Port of Tacoma to the Narrows.
September: New 24th Street NW underpass opens to traffic.
October: Westbound State Route 16 ramps at 24th St NW open to traffic;
east anchorage fully excavated; related concrete pours begin.
December: Gig Harbor caisson reaches seabed: first touch down.

2004
January: Tacoma caisson reaches seabed: second touch down; west anchorage fully excavated.
February: Deck and suspension cable fabrication begin in Korea; west anchorage concrete pours begin.
March: Air domes cut out of both caissons; seabed dredging begins.
May/June: Caissons reach full height and are sealed.
July: Tower construction begins.

2005
April: East anchorage, including placement of splay saddles, is completed.
May: West anchorage, including placement of splay saddles, is completed.
June: New concrete bridge towers are topped off at 504 feet;
towers reach final elevation at 510 feet with installment of saddles (steel castings).
August: Construction begins on suspended walkways for cable-spinning.
October: Cable spinning officially begins: first pencil-sized cable wire is pulled across the Narrows.

2006
January: South main cable spinning completed.
April: North main cable spinning completed.
June: Pre-assembled deck sections arrive by ship in Narrows.
August: Deck section assembly begins.

2007
Summer: New bridge construction is complete enough to open the new bridge in its final lane configuration (four eastbound lanes - 1 HOV, 2 general purpose, 1 add/drop). The bicycle/pedestrian lane on the new bridge stays closed until later in the fall. Until then, bicycles and pedestrians use the north sidewalk of the 1950 bridge and contractor TNC uses the new bicycle/pedestrian path as a construction staging area for work occurring under the new bridge deck.

2008
Spring: 1950 bridge retrofit is complete; 1950 bridge opens in its final four-lane configuration (1 HOV, 2 general purpose, 1 add/drop).
