Removing Air Domes - February and April 2004
Between February and April 2004, divers used cutting torches to remove the
steel roofs from the 30 airtight chambers (air domes) at the bottoms of the
tower foundations also called "caissons." The domes needed to be removed in
order for cranes to dig beneath the caissons, remove soil until the foundations
reached their final elevation. During caisson construction and prior to touch
down, the 15 air domes kept each foundation both water tight and afloat. The
steel domes measure 22-feet square each and were removed under roughly 140 feet
of water.
