8 a.m. - 5k Bridge Run/Walk (sponsored by MultiCare)
Take advantage of this great opportunity to be one of the first across the new bridge and help an important charity.
9:30 a.m. - First Toll Media Event
Riding in a 1923 Lincoln Touring Car that was the first to cross the existing and original bridges, State Treasurer Mike Murphy and House Speaker Frank Chopp will pay the first toll and cross the bridge. Once across the bridge, we will open the bridge to the community.
10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m - Walk the Bridge
Deck opens to the public free of charge for viewing, photo opportunities, ribbon-cutting and passport stations where you can get your "I walked the bridge" passport stamped.
We are expecting a busy event and a very crowded bridge deck. Do not bring alcohol, fireworks, weapons, skates, rollerblades, skateboards, bicycles, scooters, large rolling coolers, large packages or other large items onto the bridge deck. There is no storage for these items so please leave them at home. WSDOT is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
10:15 a.m. - ' Bridge of Faith' Remembrance
A commitment to improve driver safety led to this bridge being built. Washington State Patrol (WSP) Chief Batiste will emcee. We honor the late Senator Bob Oke and Representative Ruth Fisher and others, whose vision made the bridge possible.
1:30 p.m. - Builders' Ribbon-cutting & Bridge Dedication
Join Gov. Chris Gregoire near the east anchorage and watch a dozen workers, who built the bridge, cut the longest ribbon of the day.
3:45 p.m. - Tacoma Wheelmens' Ceremonial Bicycle Dedication
The Tacoma Wheelmen's Bicycle Club will hold a small, late afternoon bike trek across the bridge deck and back to promote bicycling. Please contact the Tacoma Wheelmen's Bicycle Club for information.
4 p.m. - Event Ends, Cleanup Commences
The celebration ends, and crews begin cleaning up and preparing to open the new bridge to traffic.
