Night Construction Activities

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is in its fifth season of constructing the new Narrows Bridge and related roadway improvements on State Route (SR) 16 between Jackson Avenue and 36th Street NW. Although most work occurs during daytime hours, some work also occurs at night.

A Telephone Hotline (253) 620-4440, staffed 24 hours a day, is available for the public to report comments or concerns related to night construction noise. Operators take calls and forward them to staff. If a response is requested, Tacoma Narrows Bridge staff will follow up the next work day. When project construction activities are taking place, operators will be able to contact project staff immediately. If a caller requests an immediate response during off-work hours, staff will be notified to return the calls as soon as possible.

During the fourth quarter of 2007, the construction activities below may occur between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.

[A] Roadway: Crews will reset traffic barrier across the 1950 bridge as they move the long-term lane closure from the south side of the bridge to the north side. Final paving and striping work will occur, mainly to extend the add/drop lane on either side of the 1950 (westbound) bridge.

[B] Bridge: Crews will continue painting under the new bridge’s deck. On the 1950 bridge, the long-term lane closure will move from the south side of the bridge to the north side as crews replace the rub rail with guardrail along the deck.

[C] Miscellaneous: The contractor will continue demobilizing equipment from the site.

Bridge Deck: All 46 deck sections are welded together. Crews are now applying a waterproof membrane, pouring concrete barrier and painting the main suspension cables and the suspender cables. Most work is occurring during daylight hours, but some night work may occur. Equipment: Heavy construction trucks, manlifts.

Equipment: Tractor-trailer trucks, backhoes, grinding trucks, striping trucks, utility-support vehicles, and various tools.

Noise levels at source not to eceed 85-90 decibels.

Also available is our executive summary of night noise quarterly construction reports submitted to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department as required by our noise variance.
