Tacoma Narrows Bridge Builders Enhance Toliva Shoal Habitat
As part of Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife environmental requirements,
the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Project has enhanced fish habitat at Toliva Shoal
in South Puget Sound.
Between April 11 and 15, 2005, Tacoma Narrows Constructors (TNC) improved a
rock shoal constructed 25 years earlier. The shoal, which provides habitat for
rockfish and other species, is located five miles south of the bridge and one
mile south of Fox Island.
Toliva Shoal is not the bridge project’s first enhancement to South Puget
Sound. In fact, it is one of three projects undertaken by WSDOT to lessen the
environmental impacts of building a bridge in the Narrows. Providing for the
enhancements were a condition of permitting approval through the state Department
of Fish and Wildlife.
The first ecological upgrade took place last spring, southwest of the bridge
at Narrows Park. There, bridge builder TNC removed a rock bulkhead and replaced
it with natural, ‘soft armoring’ (tree trunks). Last summer, crews
removed some of the creosote
pilings at Titlow Beach in Tacoma.
Now, the contractor will enhance habitat at Toliva Shoal. Approximately 2,600
cubic yards of quarry rock will be added to the 475-foot wide and 700-foot long
shoal. The work will occur during the day. No night work is planned. The only
noise people on shore may hear is that of a crane lifting rock from the barge
deck and placing it into water.
