Overview
WSDOT developed a route development plan for SR 169, from Enumclaw to Renton, which includes a list of safety and mobility improvements that could be implemented over the next 20 years if funding becomes available. We will present this list to lawmakers and local agencies to use as a guide for making decisions about where to invest public resources to achieve increased safety and mobility along the corridor.
How much will the improvements cost?
The cost of the proposed recommendations total $204 million in 2005 dollars. The recommendations include preliminary project costs that were developed for planning purposes only and are a starting point for determining a final cost estimate for a proposed project. The preliminary project costs do not account for potential environmental mitigation, rising material costs or other unforeseen expenditures that may occur during design or construction. These factors may increase the final costs of individual projects. However, this list of requests provides the surrounding communities with a plan to present to their state and federal lawmakers when searching for funding for these projects.
What is next for the SR 169 recommended projects?
Very few if any of the identified projects could be constructed in the foreseeable future under the available budget for highway improvements. However, the list of improvements may be incorporated into the Puget Sound Regional Council’s Transportation Plan (Destination 2030) and the Washington Transportation Plan.

Recommended improvements include: separation of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, installation of signals, and designated highway crossings.

 | Relieves Congestion
Recommended projects reduce traffic bottlenecks and chokepoints where possible, while improving the flow of people and goods through the corridor.

 | Protects Environment
As part of this study, we identified known environmental, cultural and historic resources, such as endangered and threatened species, wetlands, geologic hazards, aquifers, and air and noise issues. Each recommendation is sensitive to the environmental conditions on SR 169.

Partnerships & Cooperation
Recommended projects were based on feedback from local residents, and technical analysis and advice from the SR 169 corridor study team and WSDOT staff.
Funding
The SR 169 route development plan was funded through the following sources:
- 2004 Legislature - $400,000
- Other Agency Funds - $163,682 PSRC Grant
- Other Agency Funds - $150,000 (local agencies were instrumental in helping to secure funds to study improvements for the SR 169 Corridor. King County, Maple Valley, and Renton each contributed $50,000 in matching funds.)
- Total Funding Available from all sources - $713,682
