SR 142 - SR 14 to US 97 Roadside Safety

Status

November 2009

  • Stage 1 - Construction was completed on June 16, 2008. Work for Stage 1 consisted of installing guardrail, removing roadside hazards, and other safety improvements.
  • Stage 2 - This stage of the project is in the design phase. Construction will begin in 2010. Work will include sight distance improvements to the Bowman Grade, guardrail installation, and other safety improvements.

Overview
This roadside safety project will make safety improvements to State Route 142 starting in Lyle at the intersection of State Route 14 and ending in Goldendale at the intersection of US 97.

This project will help reduce the severity of collisions where motorists run off the roadway. This project begins where SR 14 joins SR 142 in Lyle, and will continue through Klickitat, Wahkiacus, and Blockhouse, ending at Goldendale (milepost 35).

This section of SR 142 is in need of roadside safety enhancements to help decrease the severity of collisions occurring on rural highways. A recent statewide analysis reported an increase in collisions occurring on rural highways, resulting in record numbers across the state.

The 2005 Transportation Partnership Account funding package provided funding for Roadside Safety projects to improve safety along this highway. Safety improvements will include installation of guardrail, removal of fixed objects, and improving roadsides to enhance motorist safety.

Why is WSDOT Improving Roadside Safety on this section of SR 142?
The Washington State Department of Transportation's highest priority is safety. By installing guardrails and providing roadside improvements along State Route 142, this project will help to reduce the severity of collisions that occur and enhance safety along the highway.

The End Result
This project will result in roadside safety improvements along State Route 142, and reduce the severity of collisions that occur along the highway.

Project Benefits

  • Safety - Improves roadside safety along the corridor by reducing the severity of collisions where motorists have driven off the roadway.
  • Environment - To minimize adverse effects on the environment, crews will use erosion control measures to ensure sediment and debris do not leave the project site or enter the drainage system. These measures include the use of inlet protection to contain any access water or sediment from draining onto the highway, as well as provide street cleaning.

What is the project timeline?

  • 2006 – Design and environmental process began.
  • June 16, 2008 - Stage 1 construction completed.
  • Spring 2010 – Stage 2 construction anticipated to begin.
  • Summer 2010 – Estimated completion of safety improvements.
