SR 14 - Rockfall Mitigation White Salmon Vicinity

Status

November 2009

  • Some work in the summer of 2010 will require two-hour full closures of SR 14 for the safety of drivers and workers. WSDOT is pre-scheduling these closures to allow drivers to plan their trips and avoid long delays.
  • WSDOT will make safety improvements to the State Route 14 Corridor in order to reduce the risk of rocks falling onto the highway.
  • This project will be advertised for construction in fall 2009.

Overview
WSDOT will make safety improvements to the State Route 14 corridor between mileposts 53.80 and 63.60.

The project will remove loose rock, unstable soil, trees, and other debris from these slopes. Crews will install rock anchors to stabilize the rock slope above the highway, and install wire mesh fencing along the slope to protect motorists from potential rock fall. Other improvements, determined by further study, may also be implemented.

Why is WSDOT making safety improvements to this corridor?
WSDOT uses a statewide unstable slope prioritization process to identify and rate potential slide areas. Recent maintenance records and geotechnical investigations identified this location as a high risk site and determined that rock fall prevention is necessary.

Safety is WSDOT’s number one priority. This project will increase motorist safety and prevent costly road repairs by reducing the risk of rocks falling onto the highway.

The End Result
WSDOT will evaluate the unstable slopes, remove loose rocks, hazardous timber and debris, and stabilize the slopes using bolts and protective fencing.

Project Benefits

  • Safety: This project will enhance the safety of the traveling public on SR 14 by removing loose material and stabilizing the slope in this area.
