SR 105 - Smith Creek Bridge Replacement

Status

May 2012

  • This project is currently in the design phase and is scheduled for advertisement in spring 2012.

Overview
This project will replace the existing SR 105, Smith Creek Bridge (mileposts 10.07 to 10.13)  with a new 40-foot-wide structure, consisting of two 12-foot-wide lanes with six-foot-wide shoulders.

The new bridge will help improve safety and increase mobility on SR 105 between Raymond and Tokeland, along Willapa Bay.

During construction, WSDOT will build a temporary  one-lane bridge on the west side of the existing Smith Creek Bridge to detour traffic around the work zone.

Why is WSDOT constructing a new SR 105, Smith Creek Bridge?
The existing bridge was constructed in 1959 of timber trestles.

The bridge is aging and too narrow to accommodate the types or number of vehicles that need to cross it today. It also does not meet current federal seismic, flood, or structural standards.

WSDOT is replacing the existing structure with a new bridge span built of concrete girders. The new bridge will enhance safety and increase mobility on this portion of the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway.

The End Result
A wider, safer bridge that accommodates today's traffic and meets current federal seismic, flood and structural standards.

Project Benefits

  • Safety: Improves safety and drivability by constructing a wider roadway, and installing concrete road barriers and new bridge railings.
  • Mobility: Provides a wider structure for motorists and allows traffic to flow smoothly across the bridge without delay.
  • Environmental: Removes approximately 90 creosote treated timber piles from the creek and restores an estimated 119 square feet of streambed cover.
