Vital Hood Canal Bridge maintenance closed the bridge to vehicular traffic in approximate 3-hour intervals overnights in early May 2012.
Work will take place Monday through Thursday evenings to have the least impact on the community and engineers estimate completing the work in four to six nights with the following schedule:
The bridge will be closed for travel from 8:45 p.m. to 3:45 a.m. with the exception of two 15-minute openings to allow traffic to cross.
The bridge will be open for vehicle traffic nightly from 10:45 to 11 p.m. and from 1 to 1:15 a.m.

Why is WSDOT
making repairs to the SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge guide rollers?
January 12, 2012, the west half draw span failed to open. To move the span, WSDOT’s Bridge Preservation Office (BPO) increased the output of each drive motor to 193 amps, about 50 amps higher than normally used.
Bridge engineers determined that approximately 32 divots (ranging from 1/8-to 3/8-inch depth) had formed along the steel tracks, preventing the span from moving. BPO determined that the depressions are the result of nearly 30 years of steel on steel grinding against each other due to wind, waves and tidal influences and recommended welding and grinding the divots to reduce the likelihood of future draw span opening failures.
The End Result
Once work is complete, the 32 divots will be repaired and the draw span will open with normal ampage use.
Project Benefits
Repairing the guide rollers on the Hood Canal Bridge improves reliability for opening the draw span. The ability to effectively and efficiently open and close the draw span affects both mariners and vehical travelers.
What is the project timeline?
Work begins Monday evening, May 7. Engineers estimate completing the work in four nights but the work is weather dependent and will be pushed out each week as necessary (i.e. May 14, May 21, etc.)
