Bicyclists cross the SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge into Kitsap County.
January 2013
This project has been awarded to contractor Razz Construction, Inc. for $916,323. Construction will take place through winter months of 2012/2013.
Why is WSDOT
enhancing bicycle access on the Hood Canal Bridge?
In June 2009, WSDOT completed the east-half replacement project on the SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge. The new east-half was designed and constructed with 8-foot-wide shoulders that include 3-foot-wide plates over the bridge’s grated steel decking. These plates facilitate bicyclists use of the bridge.
Since the bridge reopened, WSDOT has worked closely with the local bicycling community on the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas, and has identified funding to enhance the shoulders for pedestrians and cyclists.
The End Result
Enhanced shoulders will improve the experience for pedestrians and bicyclists that use the SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge.
Project Benefits
• Safety. Enchanced shoulders allow bicyclists and pedestrians more room between the adjacent bridge barrier the grated bridge deck.
