Rail - Clark County Rail Line - Battle Ground to Vancouver - Track Rehabilitation

Status

April 2013

  • Rehabilitation of a seven mile-section of the rail line continues with funding from the 2011 and 2012 Freight Rail Assistance Program.

Why is WSDOT rehabilitating the county-owned railroad in Clark County?
This project will continue the rehabilitation of the track between Rye Junction and Battle Ground, which will enhance safety and freight mobility. Crews will replace ties and ballast, service rail joints, replace light weight rail with heavier rail, and rehabilitate the timber crossing at State Pipe.

The line currently serves companies shipping industrial machinery and dairy products. These improvements will strengthen the viability of the line to maintain current shippers and to attract new business.

The End Result
This series of rail improvements will create a greater margin of safety, stability, reliability, and enable freight to move at a higher rate of speed up the Rye Hill. It will provide greater freight mobility, reduce truck traffic, and aids economic development along the rail line.

Project Benefits

  • Increased safety
  • Increased freight mobility
  • Enhanced ability to keep current shippers and to attract new shippers
  • Reduced maintenance

What is the project timeline?
The work on this project is scheduled to be completed by the end of June, 2013.
