This project is part of a series of projects to reduce congestion and ultimately provide high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes on I-5 through Tacoma.
Major improvements included a new collector/distributor road, wider shoulders, reconstruction of the Yakima/Thompson and G/Delin bridges over I-5, and a relocated I-5 exit to downtown Tacoma.
Safety was improved with additional merge lanes, reduction of weaving traffic movements on northbound I-5 between SR 16 and I-705, wider shoulders, improved lighting, improved roadway curvature and increased driver sight distance.
Previously, during peak travel times, heavy congestion clogged northbound I-5 between SR 16 and I-705. New dedicated ramps and a relocated exit to downtown have reduced traffic weave and congestion.
Additionally, the widened roadway makes room for future HOV lanes.
| Protects Environment
Environmental components of this project included construction of noise walls, improved stormwater treatment, permanent erosion control measures and mitigation for minor wetlands impacts.
Partnerships & Cooperation
Since 1998, the Puyallup Tribe of Indians has been involved with the Tacoma/Pierce County HOV Program by contributing to project definition and providing input on design alternatives.
WSDOT and the City of Tacoma worked together to develop the artistic pattern on the retaining wall.
