Overview
The pavement on these sections of US 101 and SR 103 deteriorated due to age and normal wear. The completed paving US 101 and chip sealing SR 103 protects the existing pavement from further damage, rejuvenates the road surface, and extends the life of the roadway. Nearly 10 miles of highway on SR 103 received a new surface and the project brought ADA facilities along SR 103 in Long Beach up to current federal standards. Additionally, a portion of US 101 near Chinook was paved.
Chip sealing repairs roadway damage and extends the life of the roadway. This treatment improves safety for drivers by creating a highly skid-resistant surface and reducing glare. To learn more about the chip-seal process, visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/regions/eastern/chipseal.
In February 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. WSDOT stood ready to translate the federal recovery funding into job creation and highway improvements, including this roadway preservation project.

Reinforced skid-resistance and glare reduction helps increase motorist safety on this stretch of corridor. Additionally, drivability is enhanced due to a smoother road surface.

The new surface reduces the effects of aging on the pavement, requires less repair work, and reduces maintenance costs.
