In February 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. WSDOT now stands ready to translate the federal recovery funding into job creation and highway improvements.
Why is WSDOT
paving this portion of the highway?
This section of I-90 was last paved in 1997. It was scheduled for rehabilitation three years ago, but funding was unavailable. The current road surface has reached the end of its lifecycle and needs to be "milled and filled" to restore it.
A new Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) surface will restore the load carrying ability of this busy section of I-90. Heavy truck traffic has increased and has further sped up the roadway deterioration. This work will also improve safety by providing a smoother driving surface, rumble strips, new striping and signage.
The End Result
Drivers will have a safer, smoother driving surface and the roadway will last longer. The project also restores the integrity of the road surface to handle heavier traffic.
Project Benefits
- Safety
- Reduced maintenance costs
- A smoother ride
- Jobs in local communities
What is the project timeline?
Construction began August 24 and should be complete in November.
