E Sunset Way is the narrow road in the background that winds around into a residential neighborhood. You can see an orange strip alongside the roadway.

Wiidening both directions of E Sunset Way will make it safer and easier for buses and trucks to share the road.

A temporary wall made of soil, high density fabric and rock supports the narrow roadway on E Sunset Way. Crews will replace the temporary wall with a permanent, concrete wall to support the wider roadway.

November 2009
- We will advertise this project for competitive bidding in February 2010.
- We expect to begin construction in spring 2010.
- We completed the first stages of the Sunset Interchange in August 2003.
Overview
We will widen E Sunset Way from 6th Avenue NE to Interstate 90, add a sidewalk and build a permanent concrete wall to support the wider roadway. We also will make safety and environmental improvements to the area. This is the final stage of the I-90 Sunset Way Interchange project.
Why is WSDOT
The narrow lanes on E Sunset Way approaching I-90 pose safety risks for drivers. Larger vehicles such as oncoming trucks and busses don't always have enough room to pass each other safely. There are no shoulders for disabled vehicles to safely pull off the road, and lack of sidewalks make it difficult for pedestrians to use the road.
The End Result
We will widen both lanes, add shoulders and a sidewalk to E Sunset Way from 6th Avenue NE to I-90. Widening the lanes and adding shoulders will improve traffic flow and allow larger vehicles to pass safely. Adding a sidewalk improves pedestrian access. The wider road will be supported by a permanent concrete support wall.
Additional improvements include upgrading drainage systems and replacing concrete barrier with guardrail.
Project Benefits
Safety – Wider lanes and a new sidewalk will provide a safer approach to the Sunset Way Interchange at I-90.
Congestion Relief – Widening this stretch of E. Sunset Way will ease traffic flow for larger vehicles.
Environment – Upgrading drainage systems will help to improve water quality.
