Construction Impacts:
-Expect Overnight Lane Closures and Ramp Closures
-The legal speed limit will be reduced between Division and Custer
-Motorists need to watch for changing road surface conditions and modified lane configurations.
This is a pavement improvement project. The main Interstate 90 lanes from Division Street to the Hamilton Interchange will be smoothed with a concrete grinding process. From Hamilton to Custer Street (near Havana) the concrete will be resurfaced with an asphalt overlay. In the Valley, the 1,500 foot test segment of westbound I-90 will be resurfaced. In addition, a majority of the on and off ramps betweeen the Geiger Interchange and the Sullivan Road will be resurfaced, a number of the freeway signs will be replaced, and some sections of guardrail upgraded. As part of this project, some short sections of adjacent city streets will be paved.
Why is WSDOT
resurfacing I-90 and the ramps, plus replacing signs?
Heavy traffic with a high percentage of studded tire use severely rutted the surface of Interstate 90 since it was last resurfaced. The surface was smoothed out in 1995. Traffic volumes exceed 100,000 on this section of Interstate 90. On and off ramp surfaces are worn and patched creating a rough driving surface, signs have lost reflectivity over the years, and some guardrail sections are not up to current standards. Also, the westbound test segment in the Valley near Flora Rd. failed prematurely and needs to be resurfaced.
The End Result
Provide a smooth, safe, and structurally sound roadway surface and extend the life of the adjacent pavement. New signs and guardrail will be installed.
Project Benefits
A smoother ride on new or refurbished pavement with easier to read signs and safer guardrail sections.
What is the project timeline?
All paving complete. Some minor cleanup items remain.
